Inside the Staycation Trend
You may have taken a vacation recently, but when’s the last time you took a staycation? The portmanteau of “stay” and “vacation” is believed to have been coined in 2003, followed by Merriam-Webster adding the word to the 2009 version of its Collegiate Dictionary. To this day the trend is going strong, with hotels and travel sites offering staycation promotions all throughout the year.
What is a staycation?
As the word suggests, a staycation is a vacation taken at home or very close to home. For instance, a working individual who takes a week off and spends those days mostly at home, relaxing and spending time with family and friends, is taking a staycation. Similarly, a couple living in New York City who decide to spend a romantic weekend at a nearby luxury hotel are also taking a staycation.
The activities and accommodations may vary, but staycations always take place either at home or a place requiring miniscule travel to reach.
Why take a staycation?
A staycation may sound like a frivolous concept, but there are several benefits that make it quite appealing.
For one, without the need to travel numerous miles on a train, plane or automobile, a staycation typically costs less than your average vacation. Traveling to and from a destination can also add unneeded stress to something that is supposed to be relaxing. There’s also no need to worry about inclement weather, natural disasters or other unexpected events hindering your plans.
From a psychological standpoint, a staycation can make you feel as though you’ve left home without really leaving home. You remain in close proximity to your friends, family, pets and other comforts of home. Homesickness isn’t even in the equation.
Hotels are becoming increasingly popular staycation destinations. It’s not unusual for individuals, couples and families to spend a few days staying in a hotel without leaving their city of residence. A hotel is a great place to relax, sleep in an über-comfortable bed, put on a plush robe and pamper yourself. You’ll leave feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and fulfilled, without having to travel far. What’s not to love?
