Staycation: Labor Day in New York City

Staycation or vacation? While some may struggle over which to choose, we recommend enjoying the fruits of your labor and not traveling for a day! Whether you want to stay in your humble abode or venture out into the concrete jungle, here are the best things to do in New York City this Labor Day.

The Waterfront in Lower Manhattan

Spend the afternoon into evening in Downtown Manhattan by the waterfront. You’ll feel as if you’re on vacation with the cool breeze and seagulls in the distance. Whether you want to explore by foot, or take a leisurely ferry ride, there are plenty of things to do while staying close to the Hudson. Treat yourself to a cool cocktail at Grand Banks, the floating bar and restaurant!

West Indian Day Carnival and Parade

(Monday, September 5th, 11am – 6pm; Eastern Parkway between Schenectady Avenue and Grand Army Plaza, Crown Heights)

You don’t have to travel to the islands to experience the culture of the Caribbean. Watch over 1 million sequin and feather covered citizens as they celebrate to the sounds of soca, salsa, calypso and more!

Rockaway Beach

(Beach 9th to Beach 149th Streets)

Still looking to improve your summer golden glow? Pack your beach towel, sunscreen, some snacks and take the A train towards Rockaway Park and get off at any of the beach stops. If you’re a surfer or want to learn how to surf, surfing is allowed between Beach 67th and Beach 69th streets—rental short and long boards are available.  Be sure to grab a cold one at Rogers Irish Tavern, one of the oldest and most famous bars in Rockaway Park.

West Side County Fair

(Sunday, September 4th 1pm – 6pm; Pier 1, Riverside Park South, West 70th Street)

Skip the hassle of traveling out to the suburbs, yet still experience the thrills of a county fair. Enjoy a full day’s worth of carnival rides, games, live music, aerialists, local food and merchandise and more!
