Memorial Day Weekend in New York City
Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial celebration of the start to summer. Pools will open, rooftop restaurants will flourish and beaches will welcome the masses. You don’t have to travel far to celebrate this grandiose event just because you’re residing within the concrete jungle. Here’s a guide to fun, easy-to-access, activities in and around New York City this Memorial Day Weekend:
Go to the beach.
New York City is an island and islands have beaches, right? Yes! There are plenty of beaches all within an hour’s train ride to and from downtown Manhattan. Depending what type of crowd you are looking for, there’s a beach for everyone. Want to be surrounded by dozens of Manhattanites celebrating a paid vacation? Venture out to Jones Beach on Long Island. Looking for something relaxing and away from the hustle and bustle of NYC? Head over to Fort Tilden Beach in Queens near Far Rockaway and rent a bicycle to access the premises. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, head down to Sandy Hook Beach in New Jersey.
Go to the park.
Manhattan has over 28,000 acres of municipal parkland. We’re not asking you to trek through all of 28,000 acres but grab a towel (or blanket), snacks, beverages, a good book and some friends (if you’re feeling social) and choose from one of many parks located in and around NYC. For a complete list of which park is best or closest to you, visit the NYC Parks & Recreation website.
Go to the parade(s).
Truly celebrate Memorial Day by honoring the men and women who sacrifice their lives while serving this country. Choose from one of five parades in New York (Queens, Staten Island, Bronx and two in Brooklyn) or visit the most iconic one in Bay Ridge- the Kings County Memorial Day Parade. The parade will start at 11am at 78th Street and Third Avenue marching up to Fourth Avenue and ending at John Paul Jones Park on 101st Street.
Go to the pool.
Don’t worry if you weren’t invited to your friend’s pool, we’ve got you covered. You may have to pay a little extra but it will be worth it. La Piscine at Hotel Americano in Chelsea offers $40 for day passes on top of the 10-floor boutique hotel. If you’re looking for something more exclusive, treat yourself to a day pass at Le Parker Meridien, located by Central Park. For $150 you will gain access to their beautiful rooftop pool and their gravity fitness center. For a complete list of pools around the city, please visit this website.
